Take It All Back
One day when we were writing songs for this album, Tom started playing the cool guitar lick that runs through this song - I said, "Hey, what's that?" and the song was written around it. The story is comprised of vignettes, each verse a separate situation where a big human mistake has been made; do you wish you could take it back? Yes.
Take It All Back
Another raging river gone dry
And it started with a little white lie
Now I wipe the final teardrop from my eye
Knowing we have said our last goodbye
If I could take it all back
Would I still paint it all in white and black
Let the truth fall through the cracks
If I could take it back
My skin crawls as I listen to your speech
Telling us how war will lead to peace
But who’s counting up the dollars and the souls
While you try to boost your rating in the polls
If you could take it all back
Would you still paint it all in white and black
Let the truth fall through the cracks
If you could take it back
Return to go, rip out the page, turn back the clock, take back the rage
Another chance, another time, I won’t commit another crime
Rewind the tape, take back the dice, if only you could roll them twice
Another day, another life, the truth can cut just like a knife
Laughing as they walk out to the car
One too many shots sit on the bar
Now her memory is carved into a tree
‘Cause he refused her when she tried to take the keys
If you could take it all back
Would you still paint it all in white and black
Let the truth fall through the cracks
If you could take it back
Would you still paint it in white and black
Let the truth fall through the cracks
If you could take it back
